On October 19, 2022, the thirteenth meeting of the Task Force on Water and Climate, organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, took place in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Task Force on Water and Climate, established under the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention), is responsible for activities related to climate change adaptation in transboundary basins, including the management of flood control and drought.
The task of the thirteenth meeting of the Task Force was to discuss activities related to water and climate change under the programme of work of the Water Convention for 2022–2024, develop plans and provide recommendations for their implementation.
The meeting was attended by experts representing government authorities, the private sector, non-governmental and international organizations, as well as other interested parties. During the meeting, the participants were informed about recent climate change adaptation activities in transboundary basins, namely the results of the last meeting of the Global Network of Basins working on climate change adaptation, the results of pilot projects, as well as climate change adaptation financing in transboundary basins. .
The Task Force was also briefed on recent developments and important next steps in the field of water and climate under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, the Nairobi Work Programme, the Adaptation Committee, etc.
The Task Force discussed how it can contribute to the processes of the UNFCCC, in particular at the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, November 2022). In addition, the Task Force discussed the possibilities of integrating transboundary/regional aspects in the development and implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), in particular in transboundary basins.
The recommendations presented during the meeting will be incorporated into the Task Force's action plan.
