The Ministry of the Environment of Estonia and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), in cooperation with Finland, are organizing a special event marking the thirtieth anniversary of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention), which was adopted in Helsinki in 1992. Estonia, currently chairing the Water Convention, will be hosting the anniversary event in Tallinn on Thursday 30 June 2022, at Tallinn Creative Hub and online.

The anniversary event will be articulated around two interactive sessions focusing on:

  • Looking back: 30 years of experiences applying the Water Convention. Participants will discuss the Water Convention’s successes and achievements of the past thirty years.
  • Looking forward: What is next for the Water Convention? Participants will discuss lessons learned and the future of the Water Convention, its globalization and its work.

Estonia will host a dinner reception to mark the anniversary of the Water Convention on 29 June 2022.

The anniversary event will be organized back-to-back with the fourth joint meeting of the Working Group on Integrated Water Resources Management and the Working Group on Monitoring and Assessment under the Convention, to be held on 28 and 29 June 2022 at Swissotel Tallinn and online.
