The Regional meeting on water resource allocation and environmental flow assessment in a transboundary context was held online on 22 and 23 September, 2020.

Representatives of the water management and environment from Afghanistan, China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, national and international experts, as well as representatives of the Secretariat of the water Convention and international organizations participated the meeting remotely.

Yerlan Nysanbayev, vice-minister of ecology, geology and natural resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Annukka Lipponen, environmental officer of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, welcomed and wished a successful work for the participants of the meeting. Yerlan Nysanbayev in his welcoming speech noted the importance of dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation between neighboring countries in the face of current and future challenges related to water matters.

The meeting provided a fruitful platform for sharing knowledge, experience and case studies on water resource allocation and environmental flow assessment in the region.

The main outcome of the meeting was that the countries of the Region came to a consolidated vision, reflected as recommendations to the global Handbook on water allocation in a transboundary context. The draft Handbook is being developed by the Water Convention Secretariat with the participation of experts and practitioners from all regions of the world. The Handbook aims to draw on global experience and support riparian states and joint bodies in developing or formalizing mechanisms for the equitable and sustainable water allocation.

The meeting was organized by the International Water Assessment Centre with the official support of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan in cooperation with the Water Convention Secretariat, as well as with «ECOTERA» LLP and «Kazakhstan Agency of Applied Ecology» LLC.
